Silly Saturday: The Straw Hat Riots

Hello everybody! Welcome back to another edition of Nations Made Fun! I'll be your host, Mr. Nations, and today we'll be discussing the Straw Hat Riots. I know it sounds odd, but let's get right int it!

The riots all started when on September 13th of 1922, a group of young people went around by removing the hats off of factory worker's heads and stomping on them two days before the unspoken date, September 15th. The kids thought that since the factory worker's hats were removed easily, why not the dockworkers? Unfortunately for the kids, the dockworkers fought back, leading to a nasty brawl. The fights spilled out on to the Manhattan Bridge, stopping traffic and eventually leading to police involvement.

Even though the first riot was broken up by police, other riots ensued shortly afterward. Since police response times were slow, the brawls often ensued for s good while before police arrived. Even off-duty police officers were getting involved in the fights, arresting people for stomping on their beloved straw hats.

The Straw Hat Riots were an odd part of history, but the world seems to have gotten past rioting over straw hats. Until tomorrow, Mr. Nations out!

Note: I apologize for not posting on Friday. I was doing some volunteer work at the elementary school in my area. I'll try to plan ahead and let you know when I won't be posting.

Fun Facts:

  • When President Coolidge wore a straw hat on September 18th, it made front-page news. Even the president can't bypass the straw hat social rule.
