- During World War I, the mayor of a small French town mistook a buried latrine (or a toilet pit) for the grave of a fallen soldier of a general. The general didn't bother correcting the mayor and when the general returned to the town after World War II, he found that the townspeople were still respectfully maintaining the "grave."
- In 1950, during the Korean War, some U.S. soldiers ran out of mortar shells, so they used a radio to ask home base for some more ammo. They used the term "Tootsie Rolls" to ask for more. Unfortunately, the person at home base took it literally and when the soldiers opened their supply box, they found actual Tootsie Rolls.
- In 75 B.C.E, a group of pirates captured and ransomed Julius Caesar. During Caesar's captivity, he bossed the pirates around and threatened he would crucify them when he escaped. The pirates thought he was crazy and finally released him. Then Caesar came back and crucified every one of them.
