- A pirate named Benjamin Hornigold once attacked a ship to steal all of the crew members' hats. They had lost all their own hats the previous night and decided to raid a ship for replacements.
- In 1847, Robert Liston performed an amputation in twenty-five seconds. Unfortunately, he also amputated his assistant's fingers as well. Both later died of sepsis.
- The Pentagon wasn't designed for any actual defense purpose. It was originally designed to fit nicely in the field between the five major roads surrounding it.
