Summer States No. 24 - Missouri

     Hello everybody and welcome back to another edition of Nations Made Fun! I'll be your host, Mr. Nations, your tour guide to the world of international history! Today we'll be looking at the twenty-fourth state of the United States, Missouri. Well, what are we waiting for? Let's dive straight into it!

     Missouri Facts:
  • Date of Statehood: August 10, 1821
  • Capital: Jefferson City
  • Population: 5,988,927 (2010)
  • Size: 69,702 square miles
  • Motto: Salus Populi Suprema Lex Esto (“The welfare of the people shall be the supreme law”)
  • Tree: Flowering Dogwood
  • Flower: White Hawthorn Blossom
  • Bird: Bluebird
     Fun Facts:
  • The first kindergarten school was started in Missouri by a Susan Elizabeth Blow. Blow would later go on to open a kindergarten training school for teachers.
  • The Gateway Arch in St. Louis is the largest manmade structure in the United States.
  • During the Civil War, Missouri was split in their allegiances, supplying both Union and Confederate forces with troops.

  1. Thanks for the reference to the arch in St. Louis. Did not know that information - made us spend more time learning about cantebary arches.
