Battle Wednesday: The Battle of Marathon

Hello everybody and welcome back to another edition of Nations Made Fun! I'll be your host, Mr. Nations, your tour guide to this massive world we all call home! Today on Battle Wednesday, we'll be looking at the Battle of Marathon, a turning point for the Greeks and a sign of their power. Well, what are we waiting for? Let's dive straight into it!

The Battle of Marathon was part of the first Persian invasion of Greece. It marked the first blows of the Greco-Persian War, a much longer and deadlier war. It was mostly fought on the Marathon Plain of northeastern Attica, also known as Athens.

The Battle of Marathon was fought because the Persian Army wanted to defeat the Greek city-states that supported the uprisings in Ionia, part of modern-day Turkey, against the Persian Empire

     Fun Facts:

  • The Persian forces had 25,000 infantry and cavalry and the Greeks were not well-equipped to fend off Persian cavalry.
  • For the first five days, the Greek and Persian armies faced each other off without making a move. This was good for the Athens because every passing day brought the Spartan arrival closer.
  • The Greeks were outnumbered by the Persians by at least 2:1.
