Battle Wednesday: The Battle of Amiens

Hello everybody and welcome back to another installment of Nations Made Fun! I'll be your host, Mr. Nations, your tour guide to this confusing world that I can help explain. Today on Battle Wednesday, we'll be discussing the Battle of Amiens, the battle that ended World War I. Well, what are we waiting for? Let's dive straight into it!

I realize I haven't talked about World War I, so let's get some backstory. World War I is commonly known as the "trench war," because of the many trenches that were dug to house the troops in the fields. Some trenches were made for a long stay, like German trenches, or some made from mud and dirt, like the Allies.

The Battle of Amiens was a battle that was detrimental to the end of World War I. The Allies launched an attack in August 1918 with a force of 75,000 men, more than 500 tanks and 2,000 planes. The attack gained huge amounts of territories on the first day, with allied troops and tanks advancing eight miles and causing 72,000 casualties.

This battle is not as well known as some others might be, but I think it's important to mention it on this blog because I feel World War I is extremely underrated. The only war that is recognized or even mentioned is World War II, which is weird because World War I was first, it's in the name!

     Fun Facts:
  • An explosion on the battlefield in France was heard in England.
  • 12,000,000 (twelve million) letters were delivered to the frontlines every week.
  • Plastic surgery was invented because of World War I.
