Historical Figure Wednesday: Leonardo da Vinci

Hello everybody and welcome back to another installment of Nations Made Fun! I'll be your host, Mr. Nations, your tour guide to this massive world we all call home! Today in Historical Figure Wednesday, we'll be taking a look at Leonardo da Vinci, one of the most famous artists to date. Well, what are we waiting for? Let's dive straight into it!

Leonardo da Vinci is one of the greatest artists, philosophers and thinkers the world has ever seen. He created many famous pieces such as the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper, a depiction of Christ feasting with the 13 Apostles. Leonardo da Vinci is known for being a worker in many subjects, such as mathematics, anatomy, and astronomy.

Many consider da Vinci to be the "starter of the Renaissance" because of his plentiful but non-functional inventions and schematics. He was extremely fascinated by flight and would often buy caged birds just to release them and watch them fly away. He also wrote a great deal of notes in his complex mirror handwriting, much of which wasn't deciphered in his lifetime.

Many technological advancements that we know today were prefaced by da Vinci. Inventions such as helicopters and planes were drawn by da Vinci and he was one of the first to understand blood circulation in humans.

     Fun Facts:

  • Leonardo da Vinci did not receive a formal education.
  • Da Vinci was almost executed on the allegations of sodomy.
  • Da Vinci was ambidextrous. He was known to draw with one hand and write with the other.
