Benjamin Franklin was a prominent leader in early American history. He was a statesman, author, publisher, scientist, inventor, and diplomat. Born into a family of moderate wealth, Franklin had little formal education. He went on to start a printing company in Philadelphia and grew rich. He became deeply interested in public affairs and helped launch a lending library, hospital, and college.
Franklin helped draft the Declaration of Independence, among other very important men. He also drafted other books, such as the Poor Richard's Almanack, which was a best-seller and further increased his fortune. He was a major voice in the drafting of the Declaration of Independence and is extremely important in American history.
Fun Facts:
- Franklin spent most of his life in unofficial retirement.
- Franklin invented the armonica, an instrument played by rubbing wet fingers on bowls to produce a pleasing sound. It was played by Beethoven and Mozart.
- Franklin was a "reluctant revolutionary" meaning he was one of the last founding to have full separation from Britain.
