Historical Figure Wednesday: Reduced Time Mode - Mikhail Gorbachev

Hello everybody and welcome back to another edition of Global History Hub! I'll be your host, Mr. Nations, your tour guide to this massive world we all call home! On today's installment of Historical Figure Wednesday, we'll be taking a look at the life of Mikhail Gorbachev. Well, what are we waiting for? Let's dive straight into it!

Mikhail Gorbachev played a major part in abolishing communism in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. His wishes for democracy brought upon the end of the Cold War and the demolition of the Berlin Wall. He was removed from the Presidential office in 1991, during a failed coup attempt. Even after leaving office, Gorbachev has worked tirelessly promoting justice and concern for the environment through his own organization, the Green Cross.

Gorbachev won the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in October of 1990.

     Fun Facts:

  • Gorbachev once starred in a Pizza Hut commercial in 1997 with his granddaughter.
  • He has received many awards for his work, St. Andrew Award from Russia, the Ronald Reagan Freedom Award, the Indira Gandhi Prize, and the Nobel Peace Prize.
  • He had only one child, a daughter named Irina.
