Misfortunate Monday: The Sinking Of The Titanic

Hello everybody and welcome back to another installment of Nations Made Fun! I'll be your host, Mr. Nations, your tour guide to the world! Today we'll be discussing the sinking of the Titanic and how it happened, so let's dive straight into it!

The Titanic was a luxury British steamship that sank in the early hours of April 15th, 1912 after striking an iceberg and causing the death of almost 1,500 people because of the lack of lifeboats to accommodate the 2,240 passengers. This historic crash led to new boat safety laws that said that all boats must have enough lifeboats to seat all of their passengers comfortably.

One of the main reasons many people thought that the Titanic was unsinkable was one of the revolutionary new designs that the Titanic's creator, a British company called Cunard, unveiled. The design was that if the ship started to take on water, fifteen rooms solely dedicated for this purpose could fill with water and the ship would still be fine.

But there was a safety flaw in this design. While the rooms were indeed watertight, the compartments only rose a few feet over the waterline, making the rest of the ship susceptible to flooding, especially if the ship started to lean or tilt. This is what is believed to cause the Titanic's demise.

Many people believe that the ship went down because it hit an iceberg. While they are right, another cause is believed to be a coal fire that weakened the ship further, making the wall crumble as it hit the iceberg. This is a terrible tragedy in history and lives didn't have to be lost if the right safety precautions were taken. Until tomorrow, Mr. Nations out!
