Battle Wednesday: The Atomic Bombing of Japan

Hello everybody and welcome back to another installment of Nations Made Fun! I'll be your host, Mr. Nations, your tour guide to the world! Today we're going to be taking a look at the atomic bombing of Japan and how it affected the country. I know that this may not technically be a battle, but I felt as if it should be mentioned somewhere on this page. Well, what are we waiting for? Let's get straight into it!

The atomic bombings of Japan occurred in retaliation to the Pearl Harbor attacks that the Japanese carried out. This would mark the first and only time a weapon that caused destruction to the extent that the atomic bomb did would ever be used in an actual war. The use of nuclear weapons is still being debated upon to this day.

What many people don't know is that America actually dropped several thousand bombs on Japan a week before they dropped the two big ones. These bombs killed more than a quarter-million and left nine million homeless. Still, the Japanese warrior code prevented the soldiers from surrender, and most resorted to taking their own lives rather than surrendering.

When the Japanese surrendered, World War II was officially over.

     Fun Facts:

  • Nagasaki was not originally on the bombing list of Japanese cities. It is believed that the current Secretary of War at the time had had his honeymoon in Kyoto and didn't want it destroyed.
  • Because of the force of the explosion, shadows of objects were permanently embedded in various surfaces. These shadows are known as the "shadows of Nagasaki."
  • The oleander is the official city flower of Hiroshima because it was the first plant to blossom again after the bomb dropped.
