Innovative Tuesday: The Invention of Television

Hello everybody and welcome back to another edition of Nations Made Fun! I'll be your host, Mr. Nations, your tour guide to this massive world we all call home! Today on Innovative Tuesday, we'll be discussing the invention of television, one of the most crucial entertainment-related inventions in history. Well, what are we waiting for? Let's get straight into it!

The first electronic television was invented in 1927 by 21-year-old inventor Philo Taylor Farnsworth. Ironically, Farnsworth lived in a house without electricity until he was 14 years old. He essentially developed a primitive camera that could capture images and project them onto a screen. The first image to be projected on television was a simple line. Farnsworth later projected a dollar sign on his television after one of his investors asked him "When are we going to see some dollars in this thing, Farnsworth?"

Understandably, the first television was only black and white but colored television was theorized way, way back in 1907.

     Fun Facts:
  • The first television remote control was invented in 1948. It was called the Tele Zoom. It couldn't do anything except zoom in the view of the television. It couldn't change channels or turn off the T.V.
  • For the first 13 years of television's existence, it remained completely commercial-free. The first ad was for a Bulova watch and lasted 10 seconds. It aired on NBC.
