Misfortunate Monday: The Exxon-Valdez Oil Spill (Updated to Include Picture)

Hello everybody and welcome back to another edition        of Nations Made Fun! I’ll be your host, Mr. Nations, your tour guide to this massive world we all call home! Today on Misfortunate Monday, we’ll be taking a look at the Exxon-Valdez Oil Spill, one of the largest oil spills in history. Let’s look into it!
The Exxon-Valdez Oil Spill occurred on March 24th, 1988 in Prince William Sound, Alaska when an oil tanker owned by company Exxon Valdez crashed into Bligh Reef. At the time, 10.8 million U.S. gallons of crude oil were spilled over the next few days. It is considered to be one of the worst environmental disasters in history, mainly due to the fact that the area was inaccessible to people, making it extremely hard to clean up.
     Fun Facts:

  • The spill was caused by a lack of sleep, as mentioned in a previous post.
  • In 2014 it was estimated that as many as 21,000 US gallons of oil were still contaminating the area.
  • It is possible to dig holes in the beach at Prince William Sound and find oil pockets.

I am sorry about the fact that the picture is not present, but rather in the form of a link. Please comment if anything is wrong with this format.

I have updated the picture and replaced it with the real thing. Enjoy!

  1. This is insane! 26 years later and it was still contaminated. Do you know if any research was done on the species in this area? I'm curious to know how the wildlife was affected. Thank you for this information, it's time for me to start digging!
