Misfortunate Monday: The Sinking of The Lusitania

Hello everybody and welcome back to another edition of Nations Made Fun! I’ll be your host, Mr. Nations, your tour guide to this massive world we all call home! Today on Misfortunate Monday, we’ll be discussing the sinking of the Lusitania, a regal ship that was sunk by the Germans before World War I. Well, what are we waiting for? Let’s jump right into it!

The Lusitania was a fine boat owned by the British that was torpedoed by a German U-Boat on May 7th, 1915 killing 1,195 people, including 123 Americans. This disaster started a series of events that led to the United States entering World War I. Relationships with Germany were already strained and the blowing up of the ship pushed things over the edge.

The luxury steamship remained a passenger ship, but was secretly modified for war. That meant that if needed, the ship would carry soldiers instead of wealthy passengers if need be. Before this, the German Embassy out ads in American newspapers stating that any ship bearing the British flag was liable to be destroyed. Unfortunately, these cautions were largely ignored by people.

Without warning, the Lusitania took a torpedo from a German ship and sank within twenty minutes, killing 1,195.

     Fun Facts:

  • The Lusitania was the largest passenger-carrying ship in the world for a brief time.
  • The Lusitania sunk in only eighteen minutes.
  • Even though the captain of the ship didn’t follow protocol, all blame was dissolved.
