Historical Figure Wednesday: George Washington

Hello everybody and welcome back to another edition of Nations Made Fun! I'll be your host, Mr. Nations, your tour guide to this massive world we all call home! Today on Historical Figure Wednesday, we'll be taking a look at the life of George Washington, the first American president, and a general in the American Revolution. Well, what are we waiting for? Let's dive straight into it, shall we?

George Washington led the American army during the War of Independence, otherwise known as the Revolutionary War. He was the first president and is considered one of the most important people in history.

George Washington was born on February 22nd, 1732 in Westmoreland County, Virginia, to a wealthy family of prosperous farmers. Washington led an illustrious life, becoming a surveyor at the age of sixteen. He was later appointed surveyor of Culpeper County, Virginia, his first public office. In 1752, he joined the colonial militia.

During the French and Indian War, also known as the Seven Year War, Washington would build up a reputation for bravery in his militia. He then returned to farming at Mount Vernon, a plantation he had inherited from his half-brother. In 1759, he married Martha Custis, a wealthy widow. In that same year, Washington entered the Virginia House of Burgesses.,  where he would consistently oppose what he thought were unfair taxes from Britain.

In June 1775, Washington was appointed commander of all colonial forces. He went about forming the Continental Army and trying to feed, clothe, and equip his soldiers. An American victory at Saratoga in October 1777 prompted the French to agree to an alliance with the Americans, effectively ending the war.

     Fun Facts:

  • The story that tells of a young Washington cutting down a cherry tree and then admitting to it when his father asks is fake. It was made up by an author who wanted to express how honest Washington was.
  • George Washington didn't really have wooden teeth. They were actually made from gold, ivory, carved animal bone, and human teeth purchased from African American slaves.
  • Washington strongly opposed the Boston Tea Party, the event where Americans threw tea into the Boston Harbor.
