Presidential Biographies No. 1: George Washington

Hello everybody and welcome back to another edition of Nations Made Fun! Today we'll be starting our Presidential Biographies, beginning with George Washington. I am getting all of my information from the official White House website, so the information might be more political than aspects of life. I just wanted to let everyone know before I get started. Well, what are we waiting for? Let's dive straight into it!

I realize that I have actually done a post on George Washington before, so this might be the second time you hear these facts. I'll link that post here. Anyhow, let's get started. George Washington was born in 1732 to a Virginia planter family. There, he learned the morals, manners, and knowledge required for an eighteenth-century Virginia gentleman.

Washington had two intertwined interests: military arts and western expansion. At the age of sixteen, he helped survey land for Thomas, Lord Fairfax. In 1754, Washington was commissioned a lieutenant colonel, he fought the first small battles of what would soon become the French and Indian War. The next year, as an aide to General Braddock, he escaped injury although four bullets ripped his coat and two horses were shot out from under him.

Washington's ingenuity on the battlefield earned him a position training the American Army against the British in what would soon be the American Revolution. He led an army of ill-trained soldiers into battle and participated in an exhausting six-year-long war. When the war was over and the United States earned their freedom, the Electoral College unanimously voted that Washington be the president of the young country.

After awhile, Washington, exhausted and finished with the drudgery of politics, packed up his stuff and went to Mount Vernon to enjoy what was left of his retirement, that was unfortunately cut short due to his death in 1799 to a throat infection.

     Fun Facts:

  • George Washington did not throw a silver dollar across the Potomac River.
  • Washington inherited his first slaves at age eleven.
  • Washington wanted to join the Royal Navy, but his mother forbade it.
