Misfortunate Monday: The Nepal Earthquake

Hello everybody and welcome back to another installment of Nations Made Fun! This is my first post following my short hiatus and I'm happy to be back! Today we're going to be taking a look at the Nepal Earthquake of 2015, the devastating earthquake that rocked the world and killed thousands of people. Let's dive straight into it!

The Gorkha Earthquake, more commonly known as the Nepal Earthquake, struck Kathmandu in central Nepal on April 25th, 2015. About 9,000 people were killed, thousands more injured and over 600,000 structures in Kathmandu and other nearby towns were either damaged or destroyed. This is widely regarded as one of the deadliest earthquakes mankind has seen damage-wise.

Since Kathmandu was in the epicenter, it took the hardest hit. Since thousands and thousands of homes and other building were destroyed, it obviously meant that people were going to be hurt. The earthquake also triggered an avalanche on Mount Everest that subsequently killed nineteen climbers. The shock also spawned landslides and mudslides that decimated rural towns and villages.

     Fun Facts:
  • Because the earthquake occurred in Nepal, a developing country, the damage was going to be worse.
  • The Dharahara tower, a UNESCO world heritage site, was also destroyed, resulting in the deaths of 180 people.
  • It has a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter scale.
