Summer States No. 6 - Massachusetts

     Hello everybody and welcome back to another edition of Nations Made Fun! I'll be your host, Mr. Nations, your tour guide to this massive, massive world! Today we're going to be discussing the sixth state admitted into the United States, Massachusetts. Well, what are we waiting for? Let's dive straight into it!

  • Date of Statehood: February 6th, 1788
  • Capital: Boston
  • Population: 6,547,629 (2010)
  • Size: 10,554 square miles
  • Motto: Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem (“By the sword we seek peace, but peace only underliberty”, Latin)
  • Tree: American Elm
  • Flower: Mayflower
  • Bird: Chickadee
     Fun Facts:
  • The chocolate chip cookie was invented in Whitman, Massachusetts and was later designated the official cookie of the commonwealth.
  • The first institute of higher education, Harvard University, was established in Massachusetts. 
  • The first settlers of what would be the United States of America settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
