Summer States No. 7 - Maryland

     Hello everybody and welcome back to another edition of Nations Made Fun! I'll be your host today and your tour guide to the marvelous world of history. Today we're going to be taking a look at the seventh state to be admitted into the United States, Maryland. Well, what are we waiting for? Let's get straight into it!


     Maryland Facts:

  • Capital: Annapolis
  • Population: 5,773,552 (2010)
  • Size: 12,406, square miles
  • Motto: Fatti Maschii Parole Femine (“Strong Deeds, Gentle Words”)
  • Tree: White Oak
  • Flower: Black-Eyed Susan
  • Bird: Baltimore Oriole
     Fun Facts:
  • The song  "The Star-Spangled Banner" was written in Maryland during the War of 1812. It was only adopted as the USA's national anthem in 1931.
  • The town of St. Micheals fooled the British by hanging their lanterns on treetops and on the masts of boats. Because of this, the town was effectively saved from the British. The one house that was hit is named "The Cannonball House"
  • King Williams School opened in 1696 in Maryland and it became the first school in the United States.
