Summer States No. 8 - South Carolina

     Hello everybody and welcome back to another installment of Nations Made Fun! I'll be your host and tour guide, Mr, Nations, your guide to the crazy world of history and facts! Today we're going to be taking a look at South Carolina, the eighth state to be admitted into the United States of Aerica. Well, what are we waiting for? Let's get straight into it!

     South Carolina Facts:
  • Date of Statehood: May 23, 1788
  • Capital: Columbia
  • Population: 4,625,364 (2010)
  • Size: 32,021 square miles
  • Motto: Dum Spiro Spero (While I Breathe, I Hope)
  • Tree: Palmetto
  • Flower: Yellow Jessamine
  • Bird: Carolina Wren
     Fun Facts:
  • America's first golf course was constructed in 1786.
  • When the British attacked a fort on Sullivan's Island, near Charleston, the cannonballs bounced off the spongy Palmetto logs used to build the fort.
  • The first battle of the Civil War took place at Fort Sumter, South Carolina
